What Hypnosis Is & Is Not

Did you know there are different forms of hypnosis? As part of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), we apply what is called Ericksonian Hypnosis, which works with indirect suggestions in conversation using metaphors, symbols and so on, to help make change, rather than direct orders.

Think about how you react when told directly to do something. Many of us resist direct orders; children are a great example of this.

I like to continually expand my knowledge and skills, so during the corona-virus social distancing period, I formally became a Clinical Hypnotherapist, incorporating another method of hypnotherapy, and became a member of the International Board of Coaches and Practitioners.

My purpose today is to demystify what hypnosis is and is not.

I’m sure many of you have seen those crazy comedy shows that use hypnosis where volunteers may strut around and cluck like a chicken. That was actually my first introduction to hypnosis many years ago!

When you think about it, those volunteers are ready and willing to make a fool of themselves in front of the family and friends; they thrive on the attention. Maybe they want to become a YouTube star, ha, ha.

What you can expect in a personalized hypnosis session is quite different than the comedy show.

Hypnosis is NOT mind control, black magic, brainwashing or voodoo.

It’s actually a cooperative activity, requires your full consent and your hypnotherapist will have no special powers over you. Imagine that we did, I’d be president right now, or living on my billion-dollar isolated island in the South Pacific, and there’d certainly be world peace 😊.

Hypnosis, is a natural state that occurs when you combine mental and physical relaxation with therapeutic imagery and suggestions. It’s very much like bring in a relaxed meditative state.

In previous posts, you learned about the conscious and subconscious. We referred to the conscious as the user and the subconscious as the software program or operating system. You also learned how important the subconscious is in making change.

In my experience, users and software programmers rarely speak the same language, and you typically have a skilled person in between to help translate (like a business analyst or relationship manager).

Your hypnotherapist is that skilled, go-between person, that communicates with you and your subconscious, using suggestions and imagery in order to program your intentions.

Did you know you’ve already been hypnotized?

  • Have you ever been daydreaming, so oblivious to the world that you didn't even hear someone calling your name?

  • ... or read a book or watched a movie and got so into it, you felt as you were in the story living it; you were in such a trance that you lost all track of time?

  • … or been driving down the road and suddenly, "snap to," wondering how you traveled the last few miles, or how you got from your starting point to your destination?

These are all altered, trance states, called, "book trance," "movie trance," and "highway trance."

During these times, your subconscious mind took over while your conscious mind wandered. So, you see...

...you’ve already been hypnotized!
You just didn’t know how to use that state for a purpose.

So, how can hypnosis help you?

Hypnosis can assist in many areas of self-improvement such as:

  • weight loss

  • becoming a non-smoker | non-vapor

  • relaxation | to sleep better

  • improve sports and performance ability

  • improve salesmanship

  • improve memory

  • improve concentration and study habits

  • exam preparation

  • ...and so much more

Now you know there is so much more to hypnosis!
